Overland from Central Java to Bali

Java is one of the largest and most populous islands in the world, so what better way to explore it than on a week-long overland adventure from its cultural heartlands to the rugged east? From Jogjakarta, capital of the ancient Mataram Kingdom, guests can journey through the island’s Buddhist and Hindu history, taking in temples and traditional arts. Visit the active volcanoes of Indonesia’s ‘Ring of Fire’, along with local villages and plantations, before taking the ferry crossing to Bali and finishing your tour by relaxing on the pristine beaches of the Island of Gods.

Day 1

Jogjakarta Arrival

Upon arrival in Jogjakarta airport, our representative will meet you and transfer you to your hotel.
Rest of the day at leisure. Overnight in Jogjakarta.

Day 2

Jogjakarta (B,L)

GamelanDepart with your driver in the afternoon to visit a traditional batik factory. Learn about the ancient techniques and have the opportunity to create your own batik. Your creation will be delivered to your hotel after drying. Overnight in Jogjakarta.

Day 3

Jogjakarta – Kraton – Prambanan – Ramayana performance (B,L,D)


Today explore the many cultures of Jogjakarta. Start with a visit to the Sultan’s Palace, also known as Kraton where depending on the day you visit, there will be a cultural performance ranging from Golek Menak Puppet’s to Javanese Poetry.

Continue with a becak ride (similar to a cyclo) exploring the neighbouring Islamic Kauman village finishing at the Taman Sari Water Palace. After this you will see a demonstration of the famous Wayang Kulit Javanese puppet before enjoying lunch a local restaurant.

In the afternoon, visit the UNESCO Heritage site Prambanan Hindu temples, and enjoy a local dinner followed by a traditional performance of the Ramayana ballet dance at an opened theatre with the illuminated temples of Prambanan as a background (only between May and October, otherwise  will be replaced by a similar show at the Pura Wisata theater).

Return to your hotel  in Jogjakarta. Overnight in Jogjakarta.

Day 4

Jogjakarta – Candirejo – Borobudur (B,L)

Borobudur Temple, Yogyakarta, Java, Indonesia.

Today, visit the UNESCO Heritage site Borobudur, the largest Buddhist Temple in the world with your local guide.

In the afternoon, after lunch enjoy an adokar horse cart ride through Candirejo village, discovering local countryside life. Finally, visit Mendut and Pawon temples.

Return to Jogjakarta. Evening at leisure. Overnight in Jogjakarta.

Day 5

Jogjakarta – Jombang – Mt Bromo (B,L,D)

Early morning transfer to Jogjakarta Railway station and enjoy a scenic train ride with your guide to Jombang in East Java. Upon arrival, your local driver will great you and continue by AC vehicle to a local restaurant for lunch in Jombang. Continue your journey to Mt Bromo, with a stopover in Trowulan on the way. Overnight on the edge of Bromo-Tengger National Park in Ngadisari.

Day 6

Mt Bromo – Jember – Kalibaru (B,L,D)


Today, wake up early and get by 4WD jeep to a viewing spot in order to admire a breath-taking sunrise on the Mt Bromo. Continue by jeep down to the volcano caldera to enjoy a 20-minute horseback ride to the stairs leading to the rim of the still-active Bromo crater.
Later, continue your overland journey to the area of Kalibaru via Probolinggo and Jember. This is a full day of driving, but through some very scenic areas. A lunch stop will be made along the way in Jember as well as breaks and photo stops along the way. Dinner and overnight in Kalibaru.

Day 7

Kalibaru – Banyuwangi – Ijen (B,L)

 After a leisurely breakfast start your day with a tour around the 9 hectares plantation garden of the Margo Utomo Resort in Kalibaru, learn about coffee as well as a large variety of spices and see the processes involved in growing.  After Lunch leave for your hotel located in the region of Ijen. Rest of the day at leisure. Overnight in Ijen.

Day 8

Mt Ijen – Lovina (B)

Kawah IjenHave an early start with an excursion by 4WD jeep to Mt Ijen. Reaching the Paltuding base camp (1850m) the trek to the top is 3km. At the top of Mt Ijen (2385m) is a large crater lake surrounded by sulphur mines and during your walk, you will probably encounter men carrying loads of up to 70 kg, often barefooted, down the mountainside.

Please note: Mt Ijen is an active volcano. Subject to volcanic activity, an alternative program will be provided if the Volcano is closed during your stay.

Return via the same route to base camp and continue by road to Banyuwangi for a late lunch. Afterwords, take a local ferry to cross the strait to Bali island and continue by road to Lovina Beach. Overnight in Lovina Beach.

Day 9

 Lovina – Selected South Bali Hotel(B)

After breakfast, drive from Lovina to your selected hotel in South Bali. Rest of the day at leisure.

Day 10-13

Bali Beach Break (B)

Visa: Irish Citizens are able to apply for a Visa on arrival (VOA) valid for 30 days upon arrival by air in Bali, Jakarta and a few other international airports. A 30-day visa currently costs US$25. Passport must be valid for a minimum of 6 months as from the date of entry into Indonesia. Onward or return tickets are compulsory.

Best time to Travel:  Indonesia has only two seasons– wet and dry –  and the tropical climate is quite similar all year long.  In most parts of the country, the wet season falls between October and April (low season), and the dry season between May and September (high season).
